Family Christmas Celebration at Tabernacle

The public is invited to a free Family Christmas Celebration at the Ocean City Tabernacle on Thursday, Dec. 19, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The evening will begin with a family dinner, followed by a special program featuring music from the ARK Preschool and Son Club After-School Program students, as well as Christmas carols for all to sing along.

“Code Blue” Issued for Severe Weather

The Cape May County Office of Emergency Management advises that all municipalities in the county will be under a “Code Blue” severe weather advisory effective from 6 p.m. Wednesday to 6 a.m. Thursday. A Code Blue emergency is intended to protect homeless people living outside, on the streets, in parks or poorly insulated settings and who are at risk for cold-related exposure and possible death. People seeking shelter in a warming center should contact their local municipality. Additional resources are available by calling the county homeless hotline at 609-886-1325 or after hours at 1-877-886-1325.

OCTC’s “Holiday Spectacular,” Sindia Displays Head Entertainment Lineup

The Ocean City Music Pier stage will light up with the sights and sounds of the season as the Ocean City Theatre Company gives five performances of “Lights, Camera Christmas: the 2019 Holiday Spectacular” over the next two weekends. Bay Avenue Construction Update

The Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority is replacing and rehabilitating the force mains that carry wastewater to the treatment plant on the bay at 45th Street. The work will be done on 31st Street from Haven Avenue to Bay Avenue and Bay Avenue from 31st Street to Eighth Street. Details follow on construction work scheduled for the week of Dec. 9 to 13.

Mayor’s Message: Dec. 6

Mayor Jay Gillian announced Friday that a beach replenishment project for the south end of Ocean City could begin as soon as next week. The contractor took advantage of calm seas last week to lay a pipeline from a dredge in Corson’s Inlet to the beach between 58th Street and 59th Street. Work to rebuild beaches and dunes will begin at 59th Street. About 1,000 feet (two blocks) of beach at a time will be closed to public access as the work moves progressively northward toward 45th Street. The project is expected to be completed within 30 days, and when it is, Ocean City will have received 505,000 cubic yards of new sand across 1.5 miles of beach, the mayor said.

O.C. Football Looks to Bright Future After Historic Year

The Ocean City High School football season was one for the books. The record books. On Thanksgiving Day, the Raiders completed a 7-2 regular season and a 9-3 campaign overall, for the most wins in 18 years. Their two playoff wins were the most in program history combined since 2002, Head Coach Kevin Smith said. “This is a great bunch of kids,” Smith said following the Turkey Day win, a 26-0 defeat of 8-2 Pleasantville, their fifth shutout of the year and the most in 36 years. “They genuinely care about each other.” The Red Raiders played only four home games all year but enjoyed a tremendous home field advantage. Discounted 2020 Beach Tags on Sale

Seasonal beach tags for summer 2020 are on sale now for a discounted $20. That price remains in effect through May 31, 2020. On June 1, the price increases to $25. Beach tags are required for all beachgoers ages 12 and older and will be in effect from June 6, 2020 through Sept. 7, 2020. Only seasonal beach tags can be purchased at this time. Weekly ($10) and daily ($5) tags will be available for purchase during the season.

Life-Saving Station to Host Events on Sindia

On the 118th anniversary of the stormy night when the 329-foot sailing ship ran aground in Ocean City, the historic U.S. Life-Saving Station 30 will welcome visitors interested in learning more about the wreck of the Sindia and the rescue of her crew. The restored Life-Saving Station (at the corner of Fourth Street and Atlantic Avenue in Ocean City) will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 14 and Dec. 15. Special guest speakers will give lectures on the Sindia at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. each day.

Police Chief Achieves Advanced Certification

The New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police announced that Ocean City Police Chief John J. “Jay” Prettyman has been awarded advanced certification. “Chief Prettyman has continued Ocean City’s proud and exemplary tradition of public safety,” Mayor Jay Gillian said. “Only a third of New Jersey’s police chiefs have achieved certification, and far fewer have reached advanced certification.” The certification program is designed to encourage the highest ethical and professional standards possible for law enforcement throughout the state, and the process is extremely rigorous.
