Search on For Missing Kite Surfer Near O.C.

The Coast Guard is searching for a missing kite surfer near Ocean City on Thanksgiving evening. Coast Guard Station Atlantic City watchstanders received a call from 911 notifying them of a kite surfer reportedly wearing all black seen drifting out to sea after falling off a kiteboard approximately 500 yards off Corson Inlet at around 3:20 p.m.

Remembering Inky, the Thanksgiving Whale

It was 1994 on Thanksgiving Day when a female pygmy sperm whale ended up stranded on a beach in Longport. Police and volunteers gave up their dinners to watch over the whale until the Marine Mammal Stranding Center arrived. The whale was in very poor condition and wouldn’t survive without immediate care. It was transported to the stranding center, a flurry of phone calls were made, and the Coast Guard agreed to airlift the dolphin-sized whale by helicopter to the National Aquarium in Baltimore, Maryland. When she arrived in Baltimore she was weak, dehydrated and in shock. There were no obvious signs of any sickness or injuries. She had poor muscle tone and seemed malnourished. Marine veterinarians could not figure out what was wrong and they didn’t expect her to live ...

O.C. Police Catch Car Burglar

The Ocean City Police Department has charged a 17-year-old male from Atlantic City with the theft of two motor vehicles, both recovered by police, and over 65 burglaries of motor vehicles and the theft of items from those same motor vehicles, according to a press release. A majority of the incidents occurred this past week. However, some of the incidents date back to July of 2019.

Mayor’s Update – Nov. 27

I’m sad to report on the passing of one of Ocean City’s finest citizens, Tommy Miles Jr., over the weekend. He and his wife, Mary Hayward-Miles, had been honored at this year’s Juneteenth Celebration with the Business Leadership Award in recognition of their contributions to the economic vitality and charitable service of the black community in Ocean City. He and Mary have lived in town for 57 years, raised a family here and worshipped at Shiloh Baptist Church. He was the owner of Tommy Miles Window Cleaning and Painting, and he also worked for Ocean City until his retirement. Most of all, Tommy was known for his kindness and generosity – he could always be counted on to help others regardless of the circumstances. I hope you all will join Michele and me in extending our deepest condolences to Mary, their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all of their friends and family...

‘Roy Gillian Day’ Celebrated in Ocean City

Roy Gillian, former Ocean City mayor and father of Mayor Jay Gillian, will be honored Tuesday night in a City Council proclamation. City Council and Mayor Gillian have proclaimed Nov. 25 as "Roy Gillian Day" in Ocean City in celebration of his 90th birthday. Members of the public are invited to the City Council meeting 5 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall to wish Roy Gillian a happy birthday.

Bay Avenue Construction Update

The Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority is replacing and rehabilitating the force mains that carry wastewater to the treatment plant on the bay at 45th Street. The work will be done on 31st Street from Haven Avenue to Bay Avenue and Bay Avenue from 31st Street to Eighth Street. Thanksgiving Service Tuesday at Ocean City Tabernacle

The public is invited to attend the annual community Thanksgiving service that will be held 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26, at the Ocean City Tabernacle at 550 Wesley Avenue. The gathering is sponsored by the interdenominational Ocean City Ecumenical Council. People of all faiths are invited.

ASL Club Hosts Activist for Deaf Community

Ocean City High School’s American Sign Language Club has invited Nyle DiMarco, role model and activist for the deaf community, to speak at the Bill and Nancy Hughes Performing Arts Center on Monday, Dec. 2 at 9 a.m. DiMarco, winner of “Dancing with the Stars” and “America’s Next Top Model,” is a leader and ambassador for the deaf community. Born into a multigenerational deaf family, he is an honorary spokesperson for Language Equality and Acquisition for Deaf Kids (LEAD-K) and founder of the Nyle DiMarco Foundation, which works to improve the lives of deaf people around the world.
