About 25 surfers participated in the fourth annual Spooks N Kooks Costumed Surf Contest on Saturday morning and filled the ocean with a wide array of creatures and characters.
For the third year in a row, Ron Curcio was named “King Kook” — this year as “the pizza guy” in a tribute to a certain cash-only boardwalk business in the news.
Nate Scarborough was tops among “Groms” as Spider-Man.
The biggest winner of the day was the Ocean City Ecumenical Council Food Cupboard, which was the beneficiary of all entry fees: (at least) five non-perishable food items from each contestant.
Earlier in the week, the surf had been well overhead as a northeast gale and passing hurricane combined forces, but on contest day, conditions were much calmer with clean, thigh-high sets rolling in early before the wind started to pick up.
