Mayor Jay Gillian gives a rundown of a series of safety improvements planned at the intersection of 20th Street and Bay Avenue to protect students at the Ocean City Intermediate School.

“They’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky, they’re altogether ooky!” The Broadway musical sensation The Addams Family (School Edition) is on stage at the Ocean City Music Pier on Nov. 5 and 6 at 7:30 pm. Featuring a cast of 7th–12th grade performers, this musical comedy presented by the Ocean City Theatre Company brings the beloved and bizarre first family of comedy to life.

The south side of the Route 52 causeway (entering Ocean City at Ninth Street) will be closed on Saturday, Nov. 6 from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. for the Trail of Two Cities 5-kilometer run/walk. Drivers may leave Ocean City during that time period using the westbound Route 52 causeway, but all motorists traveling inbound to Ocean City are advised to plan alternative routes.

The housing market’s meteoric rise in sale prices during the pandemic has led to a cautionary tale. During the past 15 months, many residential buyers found themselves out-bid on their “dream home.” Others, due to the real estate frenzy, were prevented from making an offer. As a result, eager buyers fearful of missing out on that next home began: (1) waiving home inspections; (2) releasing the three-day attorney review period; (3) not requesting Sellers Disclosure Statements and (4) buying properties sight unseen. However, if you did waive one or more of your rights listed above, don’t panic. You still have rights under the laws in New Jersey, your Real Estate Contract, and any transferrable warranties or repair/replacement guarantees that flowed to you as the purchaser of that home.

The Ocean City girls soccer team cruised to a 9-2 win in the opening round of the NJSIAA Group Three South state tournament over visiting Cumberland on a wet and rainy Monday afternoon.  Ocean City is now 20-1 on the season as it continues it’s run for a state title.  Cumberland ends their season with an 8-11 record. Leading the scorers on the afternoon were Summer Reimet with four goals and an assist.  Naomi Nnewihe scored two and added an assist, while Zoey Lappin, McKenna Chisholm and Aimee Altieri each chipped in a goal on the afternoon.  Hope Slimmer and Coryn McDonnell had two assists a piece while Joy Slimmer had one assist...

The Ocean City Field Hockey team proved victorious 2-1 over visiting Allentown on a damp and dreary Tuesday afternoon.  The win, improving the Raiders record to 19-2, advances them to the semifinal round of the NJSIAA Group Three South playoffs. Scoring on the afternoon was senior Carly Hanin with both goals for Ocean City.  Brooke Hanley and Nicole Carey each assisted Hanin’s goals.  Kelly Noon scored for Allentown. Senior Hanin, who scored both for the Raiders was excited for her team to get the win today.  “Our energy was high and our adrenaline was rushing. The whole team was hungry for another win to secure us another game,” said Hanin post game...

It was one of my greatest honors to serve Ocean City as the 1st Ward Councilman. It is personally important to me that the individual who serves-out the remainder of my term be someone who is knowledgeable, trustworthy, hard-working, and balanced in their judgment. When Terry Crowley stepped up, I knew that he was the right person for the job. I have known Terry, his wife Jen, and their two sons for over a decade. I followed his five years on the Ocean City Planning Board and discussed many of the issues with him. He is someone who does his homework and makes up his own mind. He is a person of character and does not dodge issues...

The Ocean City High School boys soccer team saw their season come to an abrupt end Monday with a 2-0 loss to Cherry Hill West in the first round of the NJSIAA Group 3 South playoffs. The Red Raiders finished the season with a 13-5 record, while Cherry Hill West will continue into the second round of playoffs with a 10-7-1 record. 

Voters will go to the polls on Tuesday to choose a governor, representatives to the N.J. Senate, N.J. General Assembly, Cape May County Board of Commissioners, and Ocean City Board of Education. First Ward voters in Ocean City also will choose a representative to complete an unexpired term on City Council.

Shaffer is passionate about the field of education and has dedicated his adult life to serving communities of children, parents and educators. He is a third generation educator, and a fourth generation Ocean City citizen. He holds a master’s degree in education from Hood College and has extensive experience in the field of education for 28 years and counting, as a teacher, Special Education administrator, vice principal, principal, and graduate professor for Towson University and the College of Notre Dame. His wide ranging experience in the field of education as well as federal, state and local leadership will provide him a good foundation for serving this community as a board member. The OC board needs leaders who exercise their responsibility for oversight over the Ocean City School District, who listen to community stakeholders and are willing to stand up to Trenton to assert local control over local matters. And we need a Board of Education that reflects the values of our community...
