LeVar Burton Headlines OC-Con Festival

“Star Trek” icon LeVar Burton will highlight this year’s OC-Con Comic Book and Memorabilia Festival at the Ocean City Music Pier. Now in its fourth year, the festival will return to early spring after being held in June last year. The event will help kick off Ocean City’s 2019 calendar of special events on April 6 and 7. OC-Con is among a series of family-friendly special events coming up in February, March and April.

Celebrate Valentine’s High Tea at the Flanders Hotel on Sunday

Just because the official Valentine’s Day has passed us by doesn’t mean the romance can’t continue. The historic Flanders Hotel in Ocean City is offering plenty to sip and savor during a romantic Valentine’s High Tea at 1 p.m. Sunday. The event features an afternoon treat of teas, sandwiches, sweets, savories, a Valentine’s gift and live music by a harpist. Cost is $39.95 per person, plus tax and gratuity.

Party With Princesses and Superheroes at the Flanders Hotel on Sunday

All kids like superheroes, right? Well, maybe some little girls favor princesses. Either way, the little ones will have a great time at the Princess and Superhero Party coming Sunday to the Flanders Hotel in Ocean City. Attendees are encouraged to wear their favorite princess or superhero attire from 10 a.m. to noon for activities that include a breakfast buffet, pictures with the characters, music, dancing and singing. The cost is $29 per person, plus tax and gratuity. Reservations are required. Call (609) 399-1000.

Ocean City Police Make Drug Bust

A Cumberland County man was arrested Thursday and charged with multiple counts of drug possession, including, cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana and prescription pills, Ocean City police said. At 12:52 p.m. Thursday, Detectives Richard Wilent and Matthew Crowley pulled over a vehicle for traffic violations driven by 44-year-old Eliezer Rodriguez, of Vineland. While making the traffic stop, the detectives smelled marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. They conducted a search and discovered crack cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana, prescription pills and drug paraphernalia. The drugs were packaged for distribution, police said.

O.C. Board of Realtors Food Drive Continues

The Ocean City Board of Realtors is continuing its Food Is Love winter food drive through Feb. 28. Donations of canned items, juice, microwaveable meals and more are sought. The Food Is Love, Share Some Love food drive will collect non-perishable food items, laundry and dish detergent, as well as ShopRite gift cards, which will be donated to the Ocean City Ecumenical Food Cupboard to provide for local needy families and senior citizens.

Children Invited to Nature Fun Day on Saturday

All are invited to a family-friendly Nature and Environment Fun Day from 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 16, at the Howard S. Stainton Senior Center. The event will feature zoo animals, crafts, games, music and stories, and will be geared toward young elementary school and preschool children. It is free to attend.

O.C. School District Receives $10,000 Grant for Gardening Program

Sustainable Jersey for Schools and the New Jersey Education Association (NJEA) announced that the Ocean City School District has been awarded a $10,000 Sustainable Jersey for Schools grant. Eleven $10,000 grants and 36 $2,000 grants were distributed to fund a variety of projects, including OCSD’s proposed expansion of its classroom gardening program at the Ocean City Intermediate School (OCIS). With the awarded $10,000 grant, OCIS will now work to install two vertical greenhouses outdoors in the school courtyard, a classroom hydroponics system and a classroom aquaponics system.
