Police Accreditation Assessment Team Invites Public Comment

A team of assessors from the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police (NJSACOP) will arrive on Monday, Sept. 23, to examine all aspects of the Ocean City Police Department’s policies and procedures, management, operations and support services, Chief Jay Prettyman announced Thursday. “Verification by the team that the Ocean City Police Department meets the Commission’s ‘best practice’ standards is part of a voluntary process to achieve accreditation, a highly prized recognition of law enforcement professional excellence,” Prettyman said. As part of this final on-site assessment, employees and members of the general public are invited to provide comments to the assessment team. They may do so by telephone or email. Women to Share War Stories at Walk for Wounded

Walk for the Wounded participants will hear the inspirational stories of two women, one who is a decorated soldier, and the other, who is a determined mother of a fallen soldier, during the 11th Annual Walk for the Wounded. On Saturday, Sept. 28, Lieutenant Colonel Shoshannah B. Lane and National Gold Star Mother Susan Price will address the crowd at the walk’s opening ceremony at the Ocean City Music Pier, beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Ocean City Midshipman Joins U.S. Merchant Marine

Jack Branin of Ocean City was recently sworn in as a midshipman in the U.S. Naval Reserve at the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) at Kings Point, N.Y. As part of his four-year education, Branin will spend one year training as a cadet aboard ocean going vessels. USMMA is the only federal academy where students train on commercial vessels traveling around the globe.

Ocean City Ready to “Rock” the School Year

To begin the 2019-2020 school year, the Ocean City School District has introduced the district-wide initiative known as “We Rock.” The vision of “We Rock" is to empower school faculty, empower students and empower the community, the district said in a press release. “We Rock” was created in late June when Superintendent of Schools Kathleen Taylor gathered a group of leading teachers, including past teachers of the year, and asked them to develop a program of empowerment.

Ocean City to Host Health and Fitness Expo

The OCNJ Healthy Living Advisory Council will host its first Health, Fitness & Wellness Expo from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28 at the Ocean City Sports and Civic Center at Sixth Street and the Boardwalk. The event will feature health food, fitness classes, speakers, vendors and a "Kids Corner" with information on raising healthy children. All are invited to this free event. Bay Avenue Construction Update

The Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority (CMCMUA) is replacing/rehabilitating the force mains that carry wastewater to the treatment plant on the bay at 45th Street. The work will be on 31st Street from Haven Avenue to Bay Avenue, and Bay Avenue from 31st Street to Eighth Street. Details follow on work scheduled for the week of Sept. 9-13.
