Sturdy Savings Bank Presents Check to Community FoodBank

Sturdy Savings Bank hosted a Food Distribution site for the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, Southern Branch. The FoodBank set up its distribution site in the parking lot of the bank’s executive offices, located at 506 S. Main Street in Cape May Court House. FoodBank volunteers and Sturdy Savings employees assisted in distributing food items to families in need. Bank representatives also presented a donation check to the FoodBank to assist in keeping their pantry stocked during this time of need.

City Council Members Announce Dates for Ward Meetings

City Council members representing Ocean City's four wards have announced public meeting dates for the next year. The meetings will address topics of concern and invite feedback on the individual wards within Ocean City. Details follow for dates and location of each meeting.

County Zoo Welcomes Baby Zebra

There is a new addition at the Cape May County Zoo that has the staff and visitors excited. Zebra parents Ziggy and Greta welcomed to the Zoo family a female foal on Monday night. Veterinarians and zookeepers are keeping their distance and a watchful eye on the foal and mother at this time, and they are both healthy and doing well. The Zoo staff is planning to conduct a naming contest for the foal and the public will be encouraged to enter.

Ocean City Library Closed Through Friday

Proceeding with caution for the safety of patrons and staff, the Ocean City Free Public Library will be closed from Tuesday through Friday. The closure will occur while the city is replacing the air-conditioning systems in the library and Ocean City Community Center.

Swimmer Missing in Ocean City Waters

At approximately 7:27 p.m. Sunday, emergency dispatchers received a call about bathers in distress at an unprotected beach on the Great Egg Harbor Inlet just south of the Ocean City-Longport Bridge, according to a city press release. When first responders arrived, family members indicated that one bather had not returned to shore. Ocean City Police Department, Ocean City Fire Department, Ocean City Beach Patrol, U.S. Coast Guard, Longport Volunteer Fire Department, Longport Beach Patrol and Scullville Volunteer Fire Department personnel responded and immediately began to search for the bather.

Mayor’s Message: July 10

Mayor Jay Gillian congratulated the Ocean City High School Class of 2020 for their graduation Thursday at Carey Stadium. "They sacrificed a lot this spring to protect the health of the community, and they have achieved so much during their school careers," he said in a statement Friday. Although the graduation included the students, crowds were not allowed inside the stadium for the ceremony because of social distancing requirements during the pandemic.

Ocean City Holds Bike Auction July 15

Ocean City will hold its annual bicycle auction 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday, July 15, at the Shelter Road Recycling Center at 1 Shelter Road, off Tennessee Avenue. The Ocean City Police Department lets anyone bid on used bikes that have been deemed by police to be abandoned or unclaimed. Approximately 115 bicycles and other surplus items will be for sale. In a typical auction, successful bids range from $1 to $350. The event provides an opportunity to purchase bikes at low cost. Details follow to register for the auction.

O.C. Offers Fun With Mask-Wearing Scavenger Hunt

The Ocean City Regional Chamber of Commerce has developed an Ocean City Scavenger Hunt to encourage people to explore the island and discover new places, all while maintaining a safe social distance from others and wearing a mask. Each week, a new clue will be posted on Facebook and Instagram. Participants need to like, share, and comment on the post, decipher the clue, go to the location in the clue, take their picture at the location wearing a mask or face covering, post the picture on the Chamber’s Facebook or Instagram page, using the hashtag #showusyourmaskocnj. Winners will be chosen from the entries that follow the rules and will be awarded with fun OCNJ swag.

Primary Election is July 7

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Primary Election on July 7 is being conducted primarily by mail. Voters who have received a mail-in ballot must mail it in or deliver it to one of the five secure ballot drop boxes before 8 p.m. on Election Day, according to the Cape May County Board of Elections. A limited number of polling places are available to voters on Election Day, but only provisional paper ballots will be available to cast your vote. Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Details follow on how to vote by mail-in ballot or at the polling places.

United Methodist Communities Recognized as “Great Place to Work”

Great Place to Work Institute has certified United Methodist Communities (UMC), a New Jersey-based senior living provider, as a Great Place to Work, according to a news release. Two of UMC’s locations are in Ocean City, The Shores and Wesley by the Bay. To determine the Best Workplaces in Aging Services, Great Place to Work analyzed anonymous survey feedback representing 223,183 employees working in senior housing and care and at-home care in the aging services industry in the United States.
