County Cuts Costs Amid COVID-19

Cape May County government is taking steps to reduce its expenditures during the coronavirus pandemic, the county announced Tuesday. Changes include a 10 percent reduction through the end of this budget year for operating expenses and capital budget items. All new bonding for capital projects has been tabled. There has also been a general moratorium on hiring.

Cape May County Announces Coronavirus Testing Clinics

Freeholder Jeff Pierson announced Monday that the Cape May County Department of Health and CompleteCare Health Network (CCHN) are partnering to open drive-thru COVID-19 testing clinics. The first drive-thru will be held on Thursday, July 30, by appointment only at the Cape May County Fire Academy, 171 Crest Haven Rd, Cape May Court House, starting at 8 a.m. Other testing dates will be scheduled based on community need. UMC Unveils ‘The Road Forward’

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, residents of long-term care communities have patiently awaited the time when they could visit face-to-face with their loved ones. That desire was granted when the New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) issued a directive permitting outdoor visitation beginning on June 21. As a faith-based ministry, United Methodist Communities (UMC) continues to focus on protecting its residents, clients and associates in the wake of COVID-19. In March, they formed a COVID-19 Response Team composed of organizational leaders representing all 13 locations, including the UMC facilities in Ocean City. The primary objective of The Road Forward is to safely progress to the “new normal’ while minimizing the risk of spreading the virus. Transitioning from more to less restrictive zone brings greater risk, so as a protective measure, the team will closely monitor and make necessary adjustments.

Career Training Program Offered for County Residents

A “Clear Path to Energy Program” that can lead to full-time employment is being offered by Atlantic Electric. Working in cooperation with the Cape May County Division of Workforce Development, and Atlantic Cape Community College, the program will offer qualified county residents the opportunity to gain valuable skills that can lead to rewarding, full-time careers. Two Music Pier Shows Rescheduled to 2021

A concert featuring singer Jackie Evancho at the Music Pier with the Ocean City Pops that originally had been scheduled for May 9, then moved to Aug. 16, will now be held on May 8, 2021, the city announced. In addition, The Doo Wop Project concert at the Music Pier scheduled for Sept. 12, will be moved to Sept. 11, 2021.

Winners Announced in O.C. Pops Virtual Student Competition

The Friends of the Ocean City Pops announced the top talents in the Tenth Annual Student Competition. This year, all student musicians had to take personal videos of their performances and send those videos to the competition coordinator, Robert Snodgrass. The names of the winners follow.

Body Found in Great Egg Harbor Inlet Identified

The Southern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the body of an adult male found floating in the Great Egg Harbor Inlet as Jabed Ikbal, 24, of Clementon, N.J., according to a news release. Ikbal entered the water at an unprotected beach on the Great Egg Harbor Inlet just south of the Ocean City-Longport Bridge at approximately 7:27 p.m. July 12 to save two family members who were in distress.
