The out-and-back course for the Railroad Run on Oct. 18 in Ocean City, NJ, follows Haven Avenue, roughly between 18th and 32nd streets.

The Ocean City Historical Museum’s second annual Railroad Run/Walk will follow the path of the island’s old railroad right-of-way down Haven Avenue on Saturday, Oct. 18.

Registration for the race begins at 8 a.m. on the 18th Street side of the Ocean City Community Center between Simpson and Haven avenues.

The race begins at 9 a.m. and follows a 5-kilometer (3.1 miles) out-and-back course along Haven Avenue, skirting the Howard Stainton Wildlife Refuge. The course is flat and more sheltered from the wind than the boardwalk races. It travels a 5K route certified by the USA Track & Field Running Technical Council.

The event benefits the museum, so runners and walkers are urged to secure sponsors to “pay the fare” and benefit the museum. Pre-registration is $20 (in addition to any contributions secured by the participants) and available at the Ocean City Historical Museum within the Community Center. Race-day registration is $25.

Everyone — runners or walkers — will receive a commemorative item and a booklet on the history of Ocean City’s railroad. First-place male and female finishers in three age categories are awarded, as well as recognition for the “conductor” with the most “fares” and the unenviable “caboose” distinction for the last finisher.

The museum is located in the Community Center at 17th and Simpson.  Stop by to register or call Noel Wirth at 609.399.1801 for more information.
