Last night, Friday, August 10, Longport hosted the 79th annual South Jersey Championship Lifeguard Races. With clear skies and relatively calm waters, all 15 beach patrols from Atlantic and Cape May counties competed in the Doubles Row, Swim and Singles Row Races.
Longport won both the Swim and Singles Row Races and came in 3rd in the Doubles Row Race, which earned them their 3rd straight Team Championship. OCBP’s Maggie Wallace came in 3rd place in the Swim Race, which earned the OCBP team a 5th place overall finish. Ocean City has won or tied the SJ Team Championships 34 times, the most by any beach patrol, with its last Team Championship in 2013. The following are the race results:

As champions, Longport will retain home beach for next year’s South Jersey Championship race. Last night’s race came at the end of the major racing schedule this summer, however smaller races will be held through the remainder of August.
