City of Ocean City, NJ – Office of Emergency Management

Special Weather Statement:

5:45 p.m. Friday, August 10, 2018

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Coastal Flood Advisory in effect for Ocean City through 1 a.m. Saturday, August 11.

With a new moon coming Saturday, predictions for exceptionally high tides are in the forecast for Friday (at 8:17 p.m.), Saturday (9:07 p.m.) and Sunday (9:57 p.m.) on the bay side of Ocean City. Flooding on low-lying streets is possible, particularly on Saturday evening, if predicted rain coincides with high tide. The Flood Advisory is likely to be extended.

For Friday evening, the National Weather Service predicts a tide of 5.4 feet on the mean low water (MLW) scale, which is just above its threshold for minor tidal flooding. Predictions for Saturday and Sunday nights are 5.7 feet. See sampling of Ocean City historic tides for context: www.ocnj.us/octides.

Residents and guests are asked to closely monitor the forecast and conditions and be prepared to move vehicles. Please don’t be caught off-guard. Street flooding could occur prior to high tide and may last for several hours. The roads closer to the beach including Central and Wesley avenues are at higher elevation. These roads also offer the safest routes of travel across the length of the island. Parking will be available at the Trinity United Methodist Church at 20 North Shore Road in Marmora (please read letter from Trinity  if you take advantage of this service).

For your safety and the protection of your vehicle and neighboring properties, never attempt to drive through flood waters, and do not drive around barricades.
