The weekend kicks off Friday, July 19, with a surf fest at the 7th Street beach.

The Chip Miller Amyloidosis Foundation will hold a trio of fundraising events at some of the hottest spots in Ocean City on July 19 and July 21.

The fun all starts on the morning of Friday, July 19 with the 16th annual Chip Miller Surf Fest. Held at the 7th Street surfing beach, the event attracts hundreds of surfers, family and friends who aim to have fun while raising awareness and money for amyloidosis research.

Surf Fest is open to surfers of all skill levels, from novices to local and regional pros. The event offers awards for more than half a dozen categories, including kids, adults and families. In addition, surfing manufacturers will be on hand with clothing, surfboards, sunglasses and other gear.

As the sun sets on the surfing fun, families will flock to the OC Waterpark on Friday evening for another CMAF event. Over the course of four hours (six hours if registered by July 1), supporters of the CMAF will enjoy private access to the waterpark and dine on some of the finest fare Ocean City has to offer.

The waterpark fun includes trips down Splash Down Falls, the Serpentine Slide, Lil Buc’s Bay, Tube Journey and Lazy River. Some of the establishments offering food include Bungalow Bowls, the Farm Stand at 14th, Boyar’s Market South, Hank Sauce, Hula Sauces, Red’s Jersey Mex Café, Sandwich Bar and Playa Bowls, just to name a few.

A skateboarding event July 21 at the Ocean City Skate Park will include awards.

On Sunday, July 21, the Chip Miller Amyloidosis Foundation will close out the weekend by partnering with Sector 9 Skateboards to present the third annual Chip Miller Skate Fest.

The 1980s-themed event starts at 11 a.m. at the Ocean City Skate Park and includes community first responders who are on site to grill hot dogs and hamburgers for the participants.

Multiple awards will be offered at the Skate Fest, including one for best era-specific costume and even one for the biggest wipeout.

As with all events, prices and participation vary, but complete details on the 2019 season can be found online at www.ChipMiller.org or the CMAF Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/AmyloidosisAwareness/

The fundraising foundation is named in memory of Chip Miller, co-founder of Carlisle Events, a collector car and truck promotion company based in Pennsylvania, who died of amyloidosis in 2004. His son, Lance Miller, of Ocean City, serves as president of the foundation.

Amyloidosis is when an abnormal protein called amyloid builds up in the tissues and organs, according to WebMD.com. When it does, it affects their shape and how they work. Amyloidosis is a serious health problem that can lead to life-threatening organ failure.
