Mayor’s Update July 22

Representatives of Cape May County were in town on Monday to provide information on a redecking project on the 34th Street Bridge that will reduce traffic to one lane for the next two off-seasons. The bridge is the county’s most heavily traveled, and there’s no sugar-coating it – the county project will cause potential delays for anybody who uses Roosevelt Boulevard to get in and out of town between October and May.

Regardless of our readers’ political leanings, few would argue that the Republican National Convention, which wrapped up in Cleveland last night, wasn’t unique. “It is a great honor to be here, I am thrilled to death,” said Avalon’s Lynda Pagliughi, the New Jersey Republican State Committeewoman representing Cape May County, and alternate delegate attending her fifth GOP convention. “This convention is making history,” she said. “This is the most exciting one I have been to. Rather than being at a convention, it feels like more of a movement. This one is electrifying.”

A Naturalist’s Guide to Seashore Vacationing

For most of us who vacation in Ocean City, there is that time of packing the clothes, the beach gear and chairs, taking care of all the last minute details and jumping in the car. We are on our way, vacation is here, we are headed to the shore. If you are traveling on the weekend, the excitement of it all is soon muddied a bit as we come to a stop on the congested roadways and wait our turn to get through the snarls of traffic. For those who are headed to Cape May County, the Somers Point area, exit 30 of the Garden State Parkway must bring to them a somewhat euphoric state. The coastal meadows which the parkway winds through, brings the feel that life is slowing down. The worries and details which were so important yesterday fade from our memory and the sense of recreation and relaxation floods the mind. The coastal estuaries and open spaces let us know that we are getting close and the excitement of vacation rebuilds in us. The children stop asking if we are there yet and a peace and serenity enters in as we cross the bridge onto the barrier islands. With all the business behind us, we settle in and think of the beach, the surf and the boardwalk. We may not think much of the bridge we crossed to be here until we leave, but as important as the sand, sun and water is to Ocean City, likewise, so is the bridge that bought us here.

Local Girls Advance, Bond, Have Fun at National Lacrosse Championships.

Ocean City High School incoming sophomore Danielle Donoghue scored a pair of goals yesterday, as the New Jersey South All Stars defeated Lacrosse Monkey of Minnesota in the U.S. Lacrosse Girls Under 15 national tournament, taking place just outside Indianapolis, Indiana. Colin Hay from ‘Down Under’ to the Music Pier

Despite the fact that he is known best for a song in which he’s handed a Vegemite sandwich with a smile that’s called “Land Down Under”, let the record reflect that Colin Hay is actually a Scotsman. I say it for the simple fact that Colin Hay’s Scottish roots, once you realize his origins (Hay was born and grew up there before moving to Australia at 14 where he met the rest of his then-band Men At Work), do indeed rise up from the sea to manifest itself in a myriad of ways all across his work. All the while doing so in a fashion that you or I might not recognize immediately if we didn’t know.
