The National Weather Service has issued a Tropical Storm Warning for Ocean City as Elsa moves over the region.
The fast-moving system is expected to affect Ocean City from Thursday evening through Friday morning. The main threat is from heavy rainfall – with 2 to 4 inches predicted and up to 6 inches possible in spots. At this time, southerly winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph are predicted. Tidal waters are not expected to reach flood levels.
Residents and guests are asked to closely monitor the forecast and weather conditions. Please don’t be caught off-guard. Flooding from heavy rain can impact parts of the island that don’t typically experience tidal flooding. Downpours associated with the storm could flood streets, and flooding could be worse during high tides at 8:11 p.m. Thursday and 8:40 a.m. Friday, though the wind and rain are expected to peak near low tide at 2:47 a.m. Friday.
Be prepared to move vehicles well in advance of these tides or downpours. The roads closer to the beach, including Central and Wesley avenues, are at higher elevation. If possible, move vehicles into driveways or toward mid-block on the streets. Parking will be available at the Trinity United Methodist Church at 20 North Shore Road in Marmora (please read letter from Trinity if you take advantage of this service).
These roads also offer the safest routes of travel across the length of the island. For your safety and the protection of your vehicle and neighboring properties, never attempt to drive through flood waters, and do not drive around barricades.
Ocean conditions are expected to become dangerous as the storm approaches. Swim only at beaches guarded by the Ocean City Beach Patrol, and stay out of the water if the OCBP closes beaches.
Loose objects on your property should be brought inside or secured. All contractors are asked to secure job sites.
Conditions are expected to improve throughout the day on Friday, and the weekend forecast calls for sun and light wind.
