Special Olympics athlete Mia Palmer, of Upper Township, competes in the mini-javelin throw at Carey Field in 2023.

Ocean City will be host to the 2024 Special Olympics’ New Jersey Area 8 (Atlantic, Cape May and Cumberland counties) Track and Field Meet on Sunday, April 28 at Carey Stadium.

More than 60 athletes will compete in the meet in hopes of qualifying for the Special Olympics New Jersey State Summer Games held at The College of New Jersey from June 7 to June 9.

“I’m proud that Ocean City can host Special Olympics events throughout the year,” Mayor Jay Gillian said in a news release. “I hope you all get a chance to come out on Sunday and give all of these athletes a warm welcome and our full support.”

The Recreation Department is seeking volunteers to staff the meet, including:

  • Escorts (to walk athletes from their staging area to the starting line or from the finish line to the awards area)
  • Timers
  • Recording
  • Entertaining athletes in the “Fun Zone”

Volunteers age 14 and older can sign up for morning (starting at 9 a.m.), afternoon (starting at 12 p.m.), or all-day sessions (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.). All volunteers will receive a shirt and pizza for lunch.

Anybody interested in volunteering can learn more by contacting Jackie Adams at 609-525-9304 or jadams@ocnj.us. All volunteers must register here:
