New permanent signs warn beachgoers to stay off the jetty at Ninth Street in Ocean City, NJ.
Starting on Monday (July 7), the Ocean City Beach Patrol will expand its extended-hours program on the beaches at Eighth Street, Ninth Street and 12th Street.
Lifeguards will be on duty there until 8 p.m. every night of the week through Labor Day. Under the existing program, those downtown beaches have extended hours only on Fridays and Saturdays.
The OCBP’s Rapid Response Team will continue to be stationed after hours at 12th Street Beach Patrol headquarters and be able to respond to water emergencies at any beach by Waverunner or ATV. Central Communications will alert the Rapid Response Team of any water rescues that are received from 911calls.
The Ocean City Beach Patrol strongly urges bathers to swim only at guarded beaches. Call 609-525-9200 or 609-525-9203 if you have questions. For all emergencies, call 911.

Ninth Street Beach was the site of a drowning last Sunday (June 29) after the OCBP lifeguards had left for the day.
The popularity of the downtown beach and the currents created by a rock jetty there were part of the reason the OCBP created the extended-hours program and Rapid Response Team two years ago.
