A weekly feature from Ocean City Beach Patrol historian Fred Miller:

The Ocean City Beach Patrol’s female lifeguards won their first team trophy 25 years ago on July 26, 1989, when they placed second in the National All-Women Lifeguard Tournament at Jacob Riis Park in New York City. Nassau County (NY) won the event.

The picture above was in the 1989 autumn issue of American Lifeguard magazine. From left: Christy Johnson, Donna Rosato, Kristie Brown and Ellen Barney.

Kristie Brown Chisholm, a rookie lifeguard in 1989, went on to be the fastest female rower in South Jersey in the 1990s and early 2000s. She will be inducted into the OCBP Hall of Fame at the lifeguard reunion party August 9 at Sandi Pointe Coastal Bistro, 908 Shore Road in Somers Point. For information, call Fred Miller 609-398-5811.

The OCBP will compete in the 17th annual Longport Women’s Invitational at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 8, at the 33rd Street beach in Longport. The Ocean City lifeguards will be trying to win their fifth straight Longport championship.  The following lifeguards were on last year’s team: Rachel Boudart, Holly Berenotto, Lexi Santer, Jill Smaniotto, Samantha Brady, Erin Myers and Carly Wray.
