StoryWalk allows families to read a book together page by page as they stroll through Lake Memorial Park.

The Ocean City Free Public Library and the Ocean City Environmental Commission have teamed up for a StoryWalk at a new location.

Everybody is invited to visit the bicycle path along Haven Avenue from 26th Street to 28th Street to ride along the path while reading “A Day In The Salt Marsh,” written by Kevin Kurtz and illustrated by Consie Powell.

The StoryWalk will be on display beginning Monday, Oct. 11 and continue through Friday, Nov. 5.

StoryWalk is a program that encourages reading and enjoying the outdoors — with the laminated pages of a book displayed at intervals along a short path.

The StoryWalk will kick off with a special event at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15 under the tent outside the library at 1735 Simpson Avenue.

The local groups will be joined by the Wetlands Institute and their program “Life in a Salt Marsh.” Participants will assist the Wetlands instructor in creating a living model of a salt marsh.

Children will be introduced to the extremely important elements of a salt marsh, including tides, mud, sun, grasses, bacteria, fiddler crabs, snails, plankton, fish, terrapins and birds, and they will learn how all these elements affect humans.

Once the model is created, participants will be able to take a closer look and investigate other hands-on activities and live animal touch tanks.

The program will last between 45 minutes and an hour and leave time to ride over to the bike path to read the book.

Participants are also encouraged to visit the Howard S. Stainton Wildlife Refuge on the other side of the bike path. Its entrance is located on Bay Avenue.

When you visit this bird sanctuary, take some photos of your discoveries.

Email photos to blehman@oceancitylibrary.org and they will be put on display at the library. The library also will have crafts and activities available for participants.

StoryWalk is an independent activity and anybody can participate at a time that suits them while it is on display.

Detailed instructions will be available at the bike path and the library to guide you.
