The following is Ocean City Mayor Jay Gillian’s weekly update to citizens posted on Friday, August 21:
Dear Friends:
A reminder that I will be holding a Town Hall Meeting regarding bay and lagoon dredging on Tuesday, August 25 at 7 pm at the Senior Center. Representatives from ACT Engineers will be present to provide background on their firm, an update on 2015 and 2016 dredging plans, and concepts for future projects. Going forward, Act Engineers will be able to provide full time attention to our dredging issues. If you are unable to attend the town hall meeting, we will post the presentation on the City’s website.
Our team, along with outside consultants where needed, continues to implement the Five Year Capital Improvement plan adopted by City Council. I would like to take a moment to discuss what we have done to guide our decision making as we implement road and drainage improvements.
Each drainage area in the City has been rated based on the following criteria:
- Adequacy to handle a two year storm.
- Tidal flooding potential.
- Public, health, safety and welfare.
- Size in acres of potential flooding.
- Outside funding potential.
- Reduction in maintenance following improvements.
We have analyzed these rating in conjunction with our road rating system, which similarly rates which streets are in the most need of improvements.
This analysis, combined with our team’s experience and knowledge of the most flood prone areas of the town, allows the Administration to make informed recommendations to the City Council for funding and improvement projects.
Fixing our deteriorated infrastructure and improving neighborhoods remains one of my top priorities as Mayor. I continue to insist on getting the facts from our professionals to insure we are spending tax dollars wisely.
The beach replenishment project continues in the south end. Approximately 800-1,000 feet of beach is closed roughly between 49th and 51st Streets. Work will progress north from there into next week, so the exact area closed is likely to change on a daily basis. You can check daily updates at www.ocnj.us/beachfill
