The following is Ocean City Mayor Jay Gillian’s weekly update to citizens posted on Friday, Dec. 18.
Dear Friends,
The three-legged CRAB (Coastal Research Amphibious Buggy) surveys the beach at Seventh Street on Saturday, Dec. 5, in Ocean City, NJ.I’m happy to report that the north end beach replenishment project could be complete as early as Saturday. We learned this week that 920,000 of a planned 999,000 cubic yards of new sand now has been pumped onto Ocean City beaches. The project area will end at 12th Street, and the rebuilt beach will be tapered to meet the existing beach at 13th Street. After pumping is complete, crews will remove equipment next week.
By the New Year, Ocean City will enjoy wide beaches and a healthy uninterrupted dune system from tip to tip. A south end beach replenishment project was completed in September, and dune grass is now in place there.
I’d like to thank all residents and visitors for their patience while these vital projects were completed.
Please join me in congratulating four young men who recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Frank Sheppard Faverzani, Eric Tin Yao Lam, Evan William Megargee, and Tanner Jack Mitzel represent the spirit of volunteerism that has always defined Ocean City.
Faverzani assembled and refurbished 15 skateboards and provided helmets with each to the Boys and Girls Club of Camden. Lam assembled and installed a locking key box for the Ocean City Public Works to organize all of its equipment and vehicle keys. Megargee painted and refurbished 158 feet of fence (black with gold spires) and the entrance sign at Lakeside Memorial Park on the 400 block of Wesley Avenue. Mitzel assembled and replaced two dilapidated osprey stands in the marshes near Merion Park, a project which the Ocean City Regional Chamber of Commerce awarded its environmentally friendly award for 2015.
These new Eagle Scouts deserve our thanks for their contributions to the community.
Paving crews will be working next week on Wesley Avenue between 21st Street and 24th Street, on Ninth Street between Ocean Avenue and Atlantic Avenue, and on Ocean Avenue between Eighth Street and Ninth Street. Weather permitting, the work will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday, December 22 and 23. Traffic will be restricted on Wesley and Ocean avenues, and the one block of Ninth Street will be closed during paving. Please use caution and seek alternative routes. The work should be done in time for Christmas.
Our community lost a dear friend this week. I would like to express heartfelt condolences from my family, the City team and the entire community to the family.
