Construction work will cause detours on Bay Avenue.

The Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority is replacing and rehabilitating the force mains that carry wastewater to the treatment plant on the bay at 45th Street. The work will be done on 31st Street from Haven Avenue to Bay Avenue and Bay Avenue from 31st Street to Eighth Street.

Work for Feb. 24-28:

As of the end of the day Friday, Feb. 21, the contractor will have installed PVC pipe, backfilled and temporarily paved from the southern terminus of the project on 31st Street up to 14th Street. Due to the need to complete an emergency repair, there is now a substantial excavation at the intersection of 14th Street and Bay Avenue. Pipe work will continue northward on Monday, Feb. 24. Excavations will be backfilled as progress is made.

At Eighth Street and Bay Avenue, the contractor has installed tie-in hardware on the existing 20-inch pipe within the excavated pit at that location. The pit will be secured, marked and covered. Starting on Monday, pipe work will proceed southward toward Ninth Street.

Traffic:

Over the weekend of Feb. 22-23, the excavation at 14th and Bay will be secured, marked and blocked, so that two lanes of traffic will be open on Bay Avenue from 34th Street to Ninth Street with lane shifts around the 14th Street excavation. After the weekend, Bay Avenue will be open to local traffic and to local businesses only from Ninth Street to 18th Street.

Over the weekend, Bay Avenue will be open to northbound traffic only from Ninth Street to Eighth Street. After the weekend, Bay Avenue will be closed from Eighth Street to Ninth Street.

In the meantime, 31st Street is closed to traffic between Simpson and Haven Avenues for the indefinite future.
