Students Urged to Apply For Free Meals

The Ocean City School District will continue providing free meals to all students for the upcoming school year through an extended federal program, but wants to let families know the importance of completing a free/reduced application this year. “If we continue to see a drop in applications, we miss an opportunity to provide our families with important resources,” said Interim Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tom Baruffi. There are a number of extra benefits to submitting a qualifying application to participate in the program in addition to free or reduced meals, according to a press release.

Special Weather Statement: Flood Advisory

The National Weather Service has issued a Coastal Flood Advisory in effect for Ocean City from 7 p.m. through midnight on Sunday, Aug. 22. A separate Flood Watch will be in effect through Monday morning. The Coastal Flood Advisory warns that street flooding could be possible with the high tide at 9:09 p.m. Sunday on the bay side (Ninth Street Bridge) of Ocean City.

The tropical system Henri was upgraded to hurricane status on Saturday morning, and the storm will pass offshore of Ocean City on a track up the Atlantic Ocean toward New England.

School District Develops Community Survey in Superintendent Search

The Ocean City School District and Board of Education officially launched the search for a new district superintendent earlier this month. In addition to a web page, the board has developed a community survey that will help determine and develop the profile of the next superintendent by outlining the desired characteristics for the job, according to a school district press release Friday.

Mayor’s Message: Aug. 20

Tropical Storm Henri is expected to remain offshore as it passes by Ocean City this weekend on a track over the Atlantic Ocean toward New England, Mayor Jay Gillian said Friday in his weekly address to the public. But the forecast does call for rough surf and ocean conditions that could deteriorate quickly. Everyone is urged to swim only at guarded beaches.

Ocean City School District to Host Community Forum Aug. 24

The Ocean City School District will host a Community Forum on Tuesday, Aug. 24 at 6:30 p.m. in the high school library. Masks will be required to enter. The forum will be an opportunity for teachers, staff, parents and other community members to have an open discussion on a variety of topics involving the reopening of schools for the 2021-2022 school year.

Ocean City Beach Patrol Hosts Women’s Lifeguard Conference

The Ocean City Beach Patrol hosted its first Women’s Lifeguard Conference on Aug. 17 at 58th Street Beach. More than 50 women representing beach patrols from throughout South Jersey attended the inaugural event, which was created to advocate for women in leadership roles and encourage camaraderie among women on all patrols, according to a news release.

Anne Beiler, Steve Green to Appear at Ocean City Tabernacle

The Ocean City Tabernacle welcomes Anne Beiler, founder of Auntie Anne’s Pretzels, to speak at the 8:30 a.m. traditional and 10:30 a.m. contemporary worship services on Sunday, August 22. Also returning to the Tabernacle on August 22 will be Steve Green to close out the 2021 summer worship concert series. He will perform a free concert at 7 p.m.

A week of pageantry in Ocean City includes the Miss Crustacean Beauty Pageant on Wednesday, the Little Miss Ocean City Pageant on Friday and the Junior Miss Ocean City Pageant on Saturday.

Pedestrian Dies From Injuries After Crash

A pedestrian involved in a motor vehicle accident at 26th Street and West Avenue in Ocean City died from her injuries, according to a joint news release Monday from Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland and Ocean City Police Chief Jay Prettyman. On Aug. 11 at approximately 8:45 p.m., a woman identified as Katherine Lux, 21, of New Hope, Pa., was struck by a vehicle driven by Wilfredo Latimer, 44, of Egg Harbor Township.
