Mayor’s Message: May 31

Mayor Jay Gillian announced that all paving for Ocean City's road and drainage project south of 55th Street is expected to be finished by next Friday. That will end the season for the city's spring road improvements. Work on new projects will resume after Labor Day as the city continues its aggressive capital improvement plan, the mayor announced Friday in his weekly message posted on the municipal website.

Doggie Dip Time For a Good Cause

The Humane Society of Ocean City is hosting a “Doggie Dip” and “Bathe to Save” fundraiser Saturday, June 2, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Fifth Street and Sixth Street beaches and that area of the Boardwalk. The shelter asks for a $20 donation per dog.

Cape May County to Test Reverse 911 System

Cape May County will be testing its Code Red system on June 7 between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The program is a reverse 911 system to notify residents during major storms or disasters. Roughly 100,000 people who have signed up for the service in Cape May County will get the message via a phone call, text or email. County officials wanted to warn the public ahead of time so there is no concern that there is a real emergency when the test goes off.

OCHS Grad Heads to Coast Guard Training

Ocean City High School graduate Paul “Paulie” Douglas Stryker Jr. was given an anchors aweigh party by his parents, Arlene and Paul Stryker, along with his younger brother, Jake, before he shipped out for basic training with the U.S. Coast Guard in Cape May on May 21. He recently took his oath at the recruiting station in Northfield. Stryker, 19, will spend eight weeks at training and told family and friends that he also looks forward to becoming a part of the American Legion Post 524 in Ocean City, according to a press release.

Flower Show in Bloom This Weekend

The Music Pier will come to life this weekend with the rich colors and aromas at the 47th annual Ocean City Flower Show. The show features artistic arrangements in a wide variety of categories. Commercial, amateur and kids’ entries compete for honors. Show times are 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. A sales pavilion will be open during the same hours. The show is sponsored by the Garden Club of Ocean City, and voluntary donations will be accepted at the door. Displays fall into artistic design and horticulture divisions, and orchids, roses, succulents, potted plants, holiday-themed displays, wreaths and table exhibits are just a small sampling of the many featured classes.

OceanFirst Foundation Co-Sponsors ArtsTank at Noyes Art Garage

Five finalists will take part in the South Jersey Cultural Alliance’s first ever ArtsTank, a creative placemaking grant competition. OceanFirst Bank Southern Region President Vincent D'Alessandro will be one of the “Sharks” selecting the $5,000 ArtsTank winner. The event will be held Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Noyes Art Garage, 2200 Fairmount Avenue in Atlantic City.

Pedestrian Struck in Ocean City Dies

One of two pedestrians hit by an SUV when crossing the road at Eighth Street and Bay Avenue on Friday night in Ocean City has died, police said in a press release Monday. A 47-year-old man from Lansdale, Pa., died. The second pedestrian, a 40-year-old woman, was treated and released from the hospital.
