American Legion R&R Program Seeks Condo Donation

Ocean City American Legion Post 524 is seeking a one-week donation of an island condominium to honor a visiting military family. The Legion’s Rest & Relation Program, now in its seventh year, welcomes service men and women annually to America’s Favorite Family Resort as a way to say “Thank you” for their service and sacrifices.

Congressman Van Drew to Address O.C. Chamber

The Ocean City Regional Chamber of Commerce will hold its monthly membership meeting on Thursday, Jan. 23 at the Flanders Hotel located at 719 East 11th Street. The event will begin at noon and will feature guest speaker Congressman Jeff Van Drew.

Bay Avenue Construction Update

The Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority is replacing and rehabilitating the force mains that carry wastewater to the treatment plant on the bay at 45th Street. The work will be done on 31st Street from Haven Avenue to Bay Avenue and Bay Avenue from 31st Street to Eighth Street. Details follow for work scheduled during the week of Jan. 13-17, including new traffic patterns for the Ocean City Intermediate School.

Testa Team, Van Drew Support CapeGOP Chairman

Congressman Jeff Van Drew, state Sen. Michael Testa and Assemblymen-elect Erik Simonsen and Antwan McClellan have officially endorsed Cape May County Regular Republican Organization Chairman Marcus Karavan for a second, four-year term as the leader of the CapeGOP. On Jan. 6, Karavan formally submitted his letter of intent to seek re-election to CapeGOP Vice-Chairs Susan Adelizzi-Schmidt and Timothy Donohue.

N.C. Man With Assault Weapon, Body Armor Arrested at Coast Guard...

A North Carolina man was arrested at the U.S. Coast Guard base in Cape May for possession of an assault rifle and numerous rounds of ammunition. Dustin A. Peters, 25, of Wilmington, N.C., was charged with possession of assault firearms, unlawful possession of a handgun, possession of hollow point ammunition, high capacity magazines and other weapons-related charges, Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland and Cape May City Police Chief Anthony Marino said in a joint press release.

Holy Spirit Defeats O.C. in Boys Basketball

Ocean City was unable to find its shooting rhythm against a tough Holy Spirit squad Thursday night, losing at home 56-49 in a boys basketball matchup. The loss dropped the Red Raiders to 2-6 overall (1-2 conference), while the Spartans improved to 5-3 (2-2 in conference).

A “Meet the Artist” reception, free and open to the public, will be held Friday, Feb. 14, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Levy is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Art (now the University of the Arts) and holds a bachelor of fine arts degree in Art Teacher Education.

N.J. Warns Students on Dangers of Vaping

There’s nothing safe about vaping. That’s the message the Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey (PDFNJ) will be sharing with youth as they return from holiday break this week. PDFNJ, in collaboration with the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General, has unveiled a media campaign about the dangers of vaping that will be distributed to each of the more than 3,500 schools in the state. The new campaign is being released in the midst of a nationwide explosion of teen use of vaping devices or e-cigarettes, which the United States Surgeon General declared has reached epidemic levels.
