Ocean City Replaces Landmark Boardwalk Clock

"Meet me at the clock." It’s been said countless times by countless visitors to Ocean City’s Boardwalk since the landmark timepiece was installed 25 years ago. But like everything else, over time, things break down, need to be improved or replaced. That was the case with the former clock at Ninth Street and the Boardwalk. Yes, time ran out for the old clock. Over the past week, visitors may have noticed something going on at the popular meeting place.

“Local Author Showcase” Real Crowd-Pleaser at Ocean City Library

Books and the authors who wrote them were on hand Saturday at the Ocean City Free Public Library, where the third “Local Author Showcase” attracted a crowd of book lovers. The event featured book signings, refreshments and even crafts. There was also a scavenger hunt with prizes for children and adults.

Ocean City Celebrates Completion of Artificial Turf Field

Lacrosse players got to try out the new artificial turf field at Ocean City’s Tennessee Avenue Sports Complex on Friday. The turf was officially unveiled during a ceremony with student athletes, city, county and state officials in attendance. The new surface takes the place of the old maintenance-intensive grass field. It is far less weather dependent, which means no more soggy, muddy fields in inclement weather.

Special Needs Students Are All Winners in Ocean City Basketball Tourney

The finale to the Unified Sports basketball season did not disappoint Thursday, as special education students from Ocean City and Cedar Creek High Schools joined forces to battle it out against Egg Harbor Township. All eyes were on the court at the Ocean City High School gym, as student athletes dribbled, passed the ball and made some shots on both sides -- keeping spectators on high alert, especially when a few baskets bounced on the rim before going in.

Cecilia Gallelli-Keyes to Run for Ocean City Council

When Cecilia Gallelli-Keyes lost the Ocean City Board of Education election in 2023 after a decade of public service, she didn’t think twice about what she wanted to do. She wanted to get right back into public office, and continue where she left off, serving the community from young people to seniors on an island she has called home for 32 years. Surrounded by 25-plus supporters including family, friends and colleagues, Gallelli-Keyes turned in her nominating petitions Tuesday to City Clerk Melissa Rasner to run for the Fourth Ward seat on City Council in the May 14 municipal election.

Ocean City Down to Five Finalists for New Schools Superintendent

The Ocean City School District has narrowed down the schools superintendent search to five finalists. During a Board of Education meeting Thursday night, school board President Kevin Barnes gave a status report on the results of the search thus far that the search committee, which is made up of five board members, has undertaken since the beginning of last month.

Political Newcomer Amie Vaules to Run for Ocean City Council Seat

Businesswoman Amie Vaules has submitted her nominating petitions to run for the Third Ward Council seat in the Ocean City municipal election May 14. Vaules turned in her petitions to City Clerk Melissa Rasner on Thursday, with her husband, Michael, and friends and other supporters with her, including Mayor Jay Gillian and City Council President Pete Madden.

Ocean City to Expand Jitney Service for Seniors

The jitney service in Ocean City is not only returning for the 2024 summer season, but it is also expanding to offer stops at several senior citizen housing complexes throughout town. In a resolution that City Council is expected to approve during Thursday’s meeting, the contract will be awarded to the same company that has provided the jitney service over the past two summers. In addition, the service has provided riders a convenient and inexpensive way to head up to the Boardwalk.

Seal Pup Found in Ocean City Dies, Necropsy Ordered

A grey seal pup discovered wandering down West Avenue in Ocean City on Feb. 7 has died at the Marine Mammal Stranding Center (MMSC), according to the center Tuesday. The seal pup was between four to six weeks old, survived a journey possibly from Maine or farther north and was only 28.8 pounds when rescued by the Marine Mammal Stranding Center staff between 42nd and 43rd Streets in Ocean City.

Third Ward Councilman Levchuk Files to Run in May Election

Third Ward Councilman Jody Levchuk filed his nominating petitions for the Ocean City municipal election May 14. By all accounts, Levchuk has had an extremely busy first term – especially for someone who is new to elected politics. Levchuk, co-owner of the Jilly’s Boardwalk and downtown shops, has plenty more he wants to accomplish, which is why he would like to serve another four-year term on Council. Flood mitigation, parking issues, and overdevelopment top his list of things he will continue to focus on improving, he said.
