The playground at 15th Street and Bay Avenue in Ocean City has been closed for reconstruction and is expected to reopen by the end of July 2014.

Families and ball players have been driving up to the 15th Street Playground all summer to find a locked gate and some bad news: “Fun Under Construction.”

City Council awarded a $92,282 contract to All Surface Asphalt Paving of Point Pleasant in February to install a new surface and playground equipment. The project includes replacement of the basketball court, drainage work and installation of a new bathroom facility.

It had been scheduled to be complete by the start of summer, but delivery and return of a piece of damaged playground equipment was one setback to a project schedule that involved multiple contractors, according to Jim Mallon, assistant to Mayor Jay Gillian.

Mallon said playground equipment should be fully constructed within a week with a special soft surface installed the following week. The playground is expected to reopen by the end of the month, he said.
