Dear Friends,

Like many seasonal businesses, the Ocean City Beach Patrol will lose staff this month as students, athletes and teachers return to school. As of Monday, the beach patrol will end lifeguard protection for the season at the following beaches: Seaview Road, Waverly Boulevard (the surfing beach), Atlantic Boulevard, 13th Street, 16th Street (surfing), 17th Street, 20th Street, 48th Street and 60th Street.

With the hot weather and warm ocean temperatures, our beaches will remain crowded. As always, I urge our residents and guests to swim only at guarded beaches. For a list of the 33 beaches that remain guarded, visit www.ocnj.us/ocbp.

I want to remind you all again that starting tomorrow we’ll have to include the 609 area code when we dial for local calls. The change is necessary because we’re getting a new 640 area code to accommodate all the new phones in our region. Learn more here.

You also may want to know about the annual meeting sponsored by Bike OCNJ. The group advocates for making Ocean City a more bicycle-friendly town and invites everybody to learn about its efforts. This meeting will focus on planned improvements to the north-south bicycle corridor in town. The meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 22, at the Howard S. Stainton Senior Center within the Ocean City Community Center at 1735 Simpson Ave.

Our city’s “Green Team” will host its annual Green Fair 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24 on the loggia at the Ocean City Music Pier.  The event is designed to educate and encourage people of all ages to adopt a more sustainable lifestyle. Green fairs allow participants to learn how small individual efforts can make a huge difference in their communities.

I hope you all will take the time in the next couple weeks to enjoy all that Ocean City has to offer. As it always does, the summer has flown by all too quickly. The Beach Boys will be back in town for four shows on Monday and Tuesday. There are still some tickets available at the Ocean City Music Pier Box Office. The Music Pier is the perfect venue for the Beach Boys, and the shows over the last three years have been a lot of fun.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

Warm regards,

Mayor Jay A. Gillian
