Athletes pose for a group shot with emergency workers who volunteer for a Special Olympics event in Ocean City in March.

Ocean City will serve as host to the Special Olympics’ New Jersey Area 8 (Atlantic, Cape May and Cumberland counties) Track and Field Meet on May 7 at Carey Stadium.

Athletes will compete in the meet in hopes of qualifying for the Special Olympics New Jersey State Summer Games held at The College of New Jersey from June 9 to June 11.

The Recreation Department is seeking volunteers to staff the meet, including:

  • Escorts to walk athletes from their staging area to the starting line or from the finish line to the awards area.
  • Timers/distance measurers.
  • Sheet runners to collect sheets of recorded times or distances.
  • Fun zone volunteers: There will be games and face-painting set up for when the athletes aren’t competing.

Volunteers 14 years and older can sign up for morning (starting at 9 a.m.), afternoon (starting at 12 p.m.), or all-day sessions.

The parade of athletes starts at 9:45 a.m. and the meet at 10 a.m. on Sunday, May 7. Most of all, spectators are encouraged to come out and cheer on the athletes in the meet.

Anyone interested in volunteering can learn more and sign up by contacting Jackie Adams at 609-525-9304 or jadams@ocnj.us or by completing this form:
