The relentless winds of a four-day northeast gale subsided on Monday just as the swell from distant Hurricane Joaquin began to arrive in Ocean City.

The combination produced a crushing overhead break at Ocean City’s downtown beaches. Few surfers ventured out, but those who did put on a show for the boardwalk crowd as the sun set.

We captured a little of the action at Sixth Street. Personal watercraft provided an easy trip out through the shore break and a jump start into the waves for some surfers. It was sort of a tow-in without a tow line.

Joaquin is weakening and moving farther out toward the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, but big surf should continue for the next couple days with unfavorable north winds fading a bit more on Tuesday and possibly turning offshore by Wednesday.
