Rain or shine, Ocean City’s Fall Block Party will go on as scheduled 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

But due to the weather, the fireworks display is canceled, Mayor Jay Gillian said in a statement Friday.

“While we don’t anticipate that Tropical Storm Philippe will have any effect on our weather as it moves up the Atlantic Ocean, the distant system is expected to generate 6- to 7-foot seas by Saturday evening,” he noted. “For safety reasons, the barge that would have carried our Indian Summer fireworks display will be unable to launch. The fireworks will be canceled for this weekend.”

Each year, tens of thousands of visitors descend on the resort town to enjoy the Fall Block Party, which is sponsored by the Ocean City Regional Chamber of Commerce.

The downtown from Fifth to 14th streets along Asbury Avenue become one huge event with mega-shopping, dining and entertaining, featuring crafters, local restaurants and merchants, organizations and businesses.

Bands will perform at locations along Asbury Avenue between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Entertainers will include Big Daddy Duo and crooner Keith Hickman.

Another exciting highlight, especially for the children are the pony rides from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the Ocean City Tabernacle grounds at Sixth Street and Asbury Avenue.

“I hope you all get a chance to come out and support our vendors and local merchants,” Gillian said. “The event is always one of the highlights of the year, and it was recently named one of the Top 10 best fall festivals in the nation by USA Today.”
