The times we spend together with family and friends will create the memories we will cherish throughout our lifetime. The times we spend on ourselves, to reset and refresh, will supply us with renewed energy to make those memories happen.

Ocean City’s Girls Weekend celebration downtown on Asbury Avenue provides the opportunity to spend time with family and friends and to rejuvenate the mind and body, especially in these struggling times.

The weekend began Friday night with the fifth annual kickoff fashion show featuring the spring and fall lineups for Ocean City’s downtown clothing shops. The fashion show was held at the Ocean City Yacht Club to a sold-out crowd.

If you missed the fashion show, Girls Weekend continued Saturday along Asbury Avenue and will wrap up on Sunday.

Julie Toner and Mary Beaver, from Montgomery County, Pa., Barb Bamford from Harleysville, Pa., and Audrey Murphy from Horsham, Pa., enjoyed the shopping, sales and food on Saturday.

“This has become an annual event for us,” said Toner. “We just walked the Boardwalk and now will spend our time on Asbury Avenue.”

They all agreed that it’s not just about the shopping on Girls Weekend, but it sure helps.

Ocean City’s advertising for Girls Weekend drew the crowds with promises of fabulous sale opportunities in stores and restaurant specials. Once again, Girls Weekend fulfilled those promises.

Along the sidewalks, you found tables with discounts and deals, displays of the latest trends in clothing, jewelry, accessories and furnishings.

The day was filled with women carrying yoga mats, shopping bags, craft materials and giveaways.

Quickly walking down Asbury Avenue were friends Marian, Trisha and Michela from Mount Laurel, N.J., on their mission to find coffee, a bakery and then the Boardwalk.

The restaurant specials, coupled with the beautiful sunshine, found many outside tables filled as waiting lines formed.

Brenda Alden from Ocean City and Marlton, N.J., Linda Powers from Huntingdon Valley, Pa., Denise Collins from Rydal, Pa., and Barb Luque from Atlantic City and Jenkintown, Pa., show off their shopping bags.

Friends Brenda Alden from Ocean City and Marlton, N.J., Linda Powers from Huntingdon Valley, Pa., Denise Collins from Rydal, Pa., and Barb Luque from Atlantic City and Jenkintown, Pa., started their day with shopping.

Staying with Brenda in Ocean City, Barb said, “This is girl time for us. We enjoy each other’s company.”

“It is a time where we come together to support each other,” said Brenda, whose children all grew up together.

The women were all in agreement when Barb added, “And there is nothing better than being by the ocean.”

Where else can you find the medicine that Ocean City’s Girls Weekend supplies for camaraderie, rejuvenation and reflection? It’s all right here – sun, salt air and shopping. Plus, fun, food and friends.
