Dear Friends,

Community members are gathering at the Civic Center this afternoon as Mikenzie Helphenstine will join the Ocean City Recreation Wall of Fame.

“Coach H” has made a profound impact on the lives of many Ocean City youth as a coach in field hockey, lacrosse and basketball. She’s a teacher and invaluable volunteer and supporter of recreation programs in the city. Please join me in congratulating Coach H and thanking her for all she does.

With the milder weather, many of our spring projects are progressing on schedule. Here are a few updates.

  • West 17th Street: A pre-construction meeting was held last week, and our contractor has the notice to proceed on the drainage and pumping station project for the neighborhood. The water company has changed its schedule to accommodate city work and will install a new water main by April 30.
  • Merion Park: The city also met last week with the engineering design contractor for the Merion Park drainage and pumping station project. Work is moving along as planned, and the firm is looking to schedule a neighborhood meeting soon.
  • Waterway Road: A new water main has just been installed in advance of an elevation and drainage project. The entire length of the roadway will be repaved as part of the project, and project coordinators hope to meet with neighbors in April.
  • Ocean Aire Condominiums: All 52 units of the seven-building condominium complex have now been elevated. This project was grant-funded, and owners should be back in their units by summer.
  • West Avenue (26th to 34th): Striping work is now complete on West Avenue from 26th Street to 34th Street.
  • Boardwalk Restrooms: Framing at 11th Street is underway and making good progress. It’s anticipated that framing crew will move to 10th Street by the end of the month.
  • Ball Fields at 35th Street: Work is on schedule to replace fencing, add a batting cage and make other improvements at the Little League fields at 35th Street. Improvements to the fields and dugouts at Fifth Street are also underway.
  • Community Center Courtyard: Renovations to the Community Center courtyard to provide an outdoor reading space for kids and exercise space for adults are now complete.
  • Clubhouse Lagoon Bulkhead: With the replacement of the city-owned bulkhead and a neighboring private bulkhead now complete, final landscaping restoration will begin.

New Jersey American Water has informed the city that their annual maintenance flushing of pipe systems will begin on Monday and continue into early May. When crews are working in your area, you may notice a drop in water pressure or discolored water. This is normal and not harmful. The company recommends that you run water until it is clear. I hope you all have a great weekend.

Warm regards,

Mayor Jay A. Gillian
