Mayor Urges Residents to Prepare For Storm

Dear Friends,

As the remnants of Hurricane Ida approach Ocean City, I want to make sure everybody is prepared.

The latest forecasts warn of an increased risk of severe thunderstorms, damaging wind and possible tornadoes.

Please take some time to secure loose items on your property, and, for your own safety, stay sheltered tonight when the threat is greatest.

Though the National Weather Service now predicts the heaviest bands of rain to pass to our north, the possibility remains for extreme rainfall in localized areas.

With our ground already saturated and water tables high, street flooding is possible on all areas of the island.

I want to encourage everybody to stay off the roads tonight and to make sure your vehicles are in a safe place.

The city has opened all municipal parking lots (surface lots and metered lots) for free parking. The parking will be free for the duration of the storm.

Please be aware that while these lots will offer a safe spot, flooding may block access to them during the storm.

Driveways and street parking near mid-block are safer, if those options are available. Parking also will be available at the Trinity United Methodist Church at 20 North Shore Road in Marmora.

Please stay safe. Our police and fire departments are always on hand at 911 for emergencies and 609-399-9111 for non-emergencies.

Warm regards,

Mayor Jay A. Gillian
