Four of Ocean City’s best and brightest were formally recognized by City Council on Thursday as the latest Eagle Scouts to emerge from Ocean City’s Boy Scout Troop 32. Frank Sheppard Faverzani, Eric Tin Yao Lam, Evan William Megargee and Tanner Jack Mitzel each achieved the accolade in 2015.

Eagle Scouts (from left to right) Tanner Jack Mitzel, Evan William Megargee, Frank Sheppard Faverzani and Eric Tin Yao Lam are honored Thursday by Ocean City City Council.

The highest advancement rank in Boy Scouting, Eagle Scouts complete an exhaustive series of requirements, which can take upwards of six years. The rank is earned only after a scout progresses through the tenderfoot, second class, first class, star and life ranks. Eagle Scouts must also earn 21 merit badges in categories ranging from emergency preparedness to environmental science, serve at least six months in a troop leadership position, participate in a Scoutmaster conference and complete an Eagle Scout board of review.

The cornerstone of any successful Eagle Scout campaign is the planning, funding and execution of a service project, however.

Faverzani, 18, is a senior at St. Augustine Preparatory School who collected 15 used skateboards, which he then refurbished and donated – along with helmets – to the Boys and Girls Club of Camden.

Lam, 18, is a 2015 graduate of Ocean City High School (OCHS) who will attend the University of Tampa in January. For his service project, Lam crafted from oak a locking key cabinet for the Ocean City Department of Public Works.

Megargee, also 18 and a 2015 graduate of OCHS, refurbished and repainted the wrought iron fence which surrounds Lakeside Memorial Park, in the 400 block of Wesley Avenue.

Jack Mitzel, a 15-year-old freshman at OCHS, assembled and replaced two dilapidated osprey stands in the marsh off 35th Street, in the Merion Park section of Ocean City.

Each Eagle Scout honored by City Council on Thursday hails from Ocean City, according to Dean Mitzel, Scoutmaster for Troop 32 and father of Jack Mitzel.

”They’re all good kids, who went over and above what was expected of them,” Dean Mitzel said. “This is something you don’t usually see with today’s youth. They’re standing out, and showing leadership.”
