Mayor’s Update: January 26

The city administration presented a proposed five-year capital plan to City Council last night. The presentation lays out a tentative schedule for improvements to roads, drainage, the beach, bay, boardwalk, public buildings, open space, recreational facilities and more. I encourage everybody to take a look at the plan. A copy of the presentation and related documents are available at www.ocnj.us/projects. Council will consider our proposal and listen to feedback before voting on accepting it next month. The plan commits more than $100 million to tackling long-overdue projects in every part of the island. It’s a lot of money, but I’m confident that the plan is responsible. Our AA bond rating, low interest rates and our growing ratable base make this an ideal time to invest in these infrastructure improvements. Most importantly, the work will contribute to the quality of life we’ve all come to expect in Ocean City...

Yes Eagles Fans and Doubters, the Birds are Headed to the...

Not even the most optimistic Eagles fans saw this one coming. And not because they had obstructed views through the eye holes of their dog masks. In this most unlikely of seasons, Sunday’s 38-7 destruction of the favored Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Championship game vaulted the Birds onto the game’s biggest stage. Philadelphia punched its ticket to Minneapolis (really? Minneapolis?) for Super Bowl 52 after spotting the Vikes a 7-0 lead and then rattling off 38 straight points. It’s their first Super Bowl berth in 13 years and only their third in team history...

Mayor’s Update: January 19

A break in the extremely cold temperatures has allowed work in Ocean City to resume from beach to bay. The Public Works team is moving stockpiles of sand to rebuild dunes at Fifth Street and in the area between 10th Street and 12th Street. The Army Corps left a supply for us to work with during the recent north end beach replenishment project. Work on the boardwalk reconstruction project between 10th Street and 12th Street remains on schedule. We expect to reopen the block between 10th Street and 11th Street in the coming days, and much of the decking on the final block is already in place...

New Theme Song for Ocean City? Scott Nuss Made His...

On a day when the Philadelphia Phillies announced Billy Joel will be performing for the fifth time at Citizens’ Bank Park this summer, musical prodigy Scott Nuss hit a home run right here in Ocean City. Nuss, a 13-year-old student at Ocean City Intermediate School performed the songs of his musical idol Billy Joel before a packed house Thursday at the Ocean City Free Public Library’s Chris Maloney Lecture Hall. Such favorites as “New York State of Mind,” “Scenes From an Italian Restaurant” and of course “Piano Man” enthralled the crowd...
