Ocean City Tops Rival Mainland in Basketball Showdown

The rivalry between Ocean City and Mainland did not disappoint on Tuesday night in front of a packed crowd for the boys’ basketball game. The Red Raiders came out on top, routing the Mustangs 58-48. Ocean City's Joey Sacco led all scorers with 21 points on the evening.

O.C. Happenings: MLK Day Ceremony January 21

Ocean City's celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day tops the list of Ocean City Happenings in January. The ceremony, a long tradition in Ocean City, moves this year from its customary date on the Saturday before to the Monday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 21. It will be held at noon at the Hughes Performing Arts Center at Ocean City High School. Preceding the ceremony, a communitywide cleanup that is part of a national Day of Service on Jan. 21 in Dr. King's honor will take place in Ocean City from 9 a.m. to noon.

Sheriff’s Project Lifesaver Proves to be Just That

Caregivers and loved ones of the elderly and autistic individuals have enough to worry about. Thanks to a free program available through the Cape May County Sheriff’s Office, the fear of the person wandering off and becoming lost doesn’t need to be one of them. Project Lifesaver utilizes a system that uses a small radio transmitter worn on the client’s wrist or ankle and a receiver used by the Sheriff’s Officers to quickly locate clients suffering from Alzeimer’s Disease or dementia, or those with autism who may be at risk to wander off. “This is not new, or cutting edge technology,” said Sheriff’s Officer Dustin Phillips...

Ocean City Students Attend Leadership Conference

Nine Ocean City Intermediate School students joined dozens of middle school students from across the state at the 2018-2019 Middle School Leadership Institute conference, “Building Bridges to Success,” held at the Camden County College in Blackwood. The students, under the leadership of guidance counselor Shannon Pruitt and teacher Cholehna Weaver, learned how to effectively address the current challenges they may face in school and in life.

Mayor’s Message: Jan. 4

In his weekly message to the public, Mayor Jay Gillian thanks the entire city team, the Chamber of Commerce, business contributors and all of the many volunteers who helped make the First Night and First Day celebration such a success. He also gives an update on two major drainage projects in the center of Ocean City and the north end.

O.C. Girls Soar Past Holy Spirit

In the first game of the new year, the Ocean City High School girls’ basketball team came out strong against Holy Spirit, defeating the Spartans 53-17. Danielle Donoghue, a senior for Ocean City, led all scorers with 15 points. The Red Raiders are now 5-2.

County Freeholder Desiderio Sworn in for Sixth Term

Cape May County Freeholder Leonard C. Desiderio was sworn in Thursday for his sixth term. A Republican, Desiderio was first elected to the freeholder board in 2002. He was re-elected in November to another three-year term.

Fireworks in Ocean City Canceled

Due to onshore winds that were expected to increase in strength Monday evening, the First Night fireworks display scheduled for midnight on New Year's Eve was canceled.
