Residents at an Ocean City condominium complex had mixed emotions about leaving their homes. They were sad to leave, but hopeful that when they return in six months, they will find their units will be lifted far above the floodwaters. The project at the flood-prone Ocean Aire condos at 43rd Street and West Avenue in the south end of town is slated to begin in November and be completed by April. The city was awarded a $3 million federal grant to elevate the seven-building condo complex.

Beatrice Pinkerton has lived in Ocean City for 40 years. Her family has owned a duplex on Fourth Street for a century. In her decades living on the island she loves, she had never previously gone before City Council to voice concerns about anything. That all changed when she appeared at the Oct. 7 Council meeting to complain about what she called an "insane" amount of  construction over this past summer. The 89-year-old Pinkerton urged Council to impose a moratorium on construction between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

The Ocean City Fall Block Party made up for lost time Saturday. After a year without it due to the pandemic, it seemed families couldn’t get enough of the festival. Visitors enjoyed a blockbuster event, browsing the vendors along Asbury Avenue in a gigantic pedestrian mall-like setting. In all, there were 400 vendors and crafters lining Asbury from Fifth to 14th streets, selling everything from holiday gifts to delicious food.

Catherine Panico, of Ocean City, is a business owner in the community and married mother of four. She is also a certified teacher who would like to see more transparency on the Board of Education. She discusses her plans and priorities if she is elected to the school board.

Ocean City Primary School preschoolers are helping to bring some joy into the lives of young children who are battling illnesses with a project to provide toys and other items to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. The Preschool Community Outreach Toy Drive Project at the Primary School, 550 West Ave., began Oct. 1. New toy donations may be dropped off at the school through Oct. 22. Preschoolers were eager to help adults out Tuesday and dug in -- literally -- with shovels in hand to help create a monarch butterfly garden at the Ocean City Tabernacle. The Ocean City Environmental Commission and the ARK Preschool at the Tabernacle, 550 Wesley Ave., joined together for the project. The focus was not only to help grow the monarch butterfly population, but also to educate the children about the importance of the butterfly.

Spectacular sun-splashed skies, warm breezes, Boardwalk amusements and a host of shopping and dining choices -- it seemed Monday had it all for residents and visitors in Ocean City. Except for the crowds, trouble finding parking and long lines. While it wasn’t a bustling early fall day, plenty of people were biking on the Boardwalk, lounging on the beaches, shopping and dining in Ocean City, and relishing the last of the summer-like days.

A home in the heart of Ocean City's Historic District appears to be on the verge of being sold. Neighbors had feared the nearly 120-year-old house would be demolished if a buyer wasn't found. However, the home at 615 Wesley Ave. is under contract for $849,000, according to a real estate website.

The Ocean City Yacht Club was transformed into a night of excitement and celebration Friday in honor of the 100th anniversary of the Ocean City Regional Chamber of Commerce. The Yacht Club sold out and the who’s who from dignitaries to business owners to longtime residents enjoyed a night of dancing, dinner and drinks to finally be able to celebrate the century of the Chamber, albeit on the 101st year.

Two decades have passed since Navy Ensign John R. Elliott was killed at age 22 by a drunk driver. For his parents, Bill and Muriel Elliott, of Egg Harbor Township, they have made it their life’s work to not only keep their son’s memory alive, but help save others so that other parents do not receive the devastating phone call they did on the morning of July 22, 2000, informing them of John's death. They started the John R. Elliott HERO Campaign for Designated Drivers shortly after their son’s death. The non-profit organization promotes the importance of designated drivers. On Oct. 17, the HERO Campaign will hold its annual fundraising event on the Ocean City Boardwalk.
