The Ocean City Primary School held its annual spelling bee Monday that highlighted the top spelling talents in the school in some really great and friendly competition.

Mary Beth Libro, a first-grade teacher, was in charge of the spelling bee.

“Fifty-two students participated in the ‘Bee’ which lasted over 30 rounds,” Libro said in an email. “I couldn’t be prouder of all third graders for being a part of such a fun and successful event.”

Calvin Botitho received the top prize showcasing his spelling talents. His winning word was “person.” His championship word was “shatter.” The third grader received a trophy and a $100 check.

Gavin Gesler awaits the word to spell from the proctor Dr. Curt Nath.

Daniel Urban placed second. His winning word was “belief.” He received a trophy and a $75 check. Gavin Gesler placed third and received a trophy and $50 check. He lost on the word “crying,” Libro said.

Libro gave special thanks to Bonnie Quigley and Beth Pasternak “for being our judges for the day, Miss Evelyn Roche (last year’s winner) for guest judging the final rounds, Dr. Curt Nath (director of academic services) for proctoring the Bee, and to the PTA for their generosity in providing the trophies and checks.”
