Ocean City Installs Anti-Wind Farm Signs on Boardwalk

Ocean City Mayor Jay Gillian and his administration want visitors and residents to be informed when it comes to a proposed offshore wind farm that would set 98 towering turbines 15 miles offshore from Atlantic City to Stone Harbor. In fact, Boardwalk strollers and beachgoers may have noticed signs at the Fifth Street and Sixth Street beach entrances installed Monday. They include a depiction of what the project could look like from shore, namely the wind turbines.

Baby Oysters Fill Shellfish Nursery at Bayside Center in Ocean City

Some babies arrived at the Bayside Center in Ocean City on Monday – 50,000 of them, in fact. Baby oysters were delivered to the shellfish nursery or "upweller" at the facility. At the end of the season, the oysters will be placed in Great Egg Harbor Bay to help clean the water, explained ACT Engineers Educational Coordinator Tricia Rosina.

Popular Ocean City Pizzeria Reopens Under New Ownership

When Ocean City resident and businessman Chris Monihan learned that his favorite local pizza place, Express Pizza and Subs, was closing its doors, he made a call. “It was late spring, April. We had heard that there was a deal with someone to buy it, but the deal fell through,” Monihan said in an interview. “It’s a north end staple. Our family and our friends all eat here. There’s nothing really else in the Gardens or in the north end of Ocean City.” That’s when he enlisted his good friend and fellow businessman, Ocean City resident and entrepreneur TJ Heist. “I asked him if he wanted to take it on,” Monihan explained. Heist said absolutely.

Surf Fest Raises Funds in Memory of Chip Miller

The annual Chip Miller Surf Fest brought more than 150 surfers out to the 7th Street surfing beach in Ocean City on Friday to help raise funds and awareness for Amyloidosis research. Miller, who raised his family in Ocean City, was diagnosed in 2004 with Amyloidosis, a rare disease which occurs when an abnormal protein, called amyloid, builds up in one or more organs causing a malfunction. A few months later, he passed away. For 19 years, his son, Lance Miller, of Ocean City, has held the Surf Fest in honor of his father.

The remaining ones are scheduled for Aug. 10 and Aug. 24. They all run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Flyers Caravan Brings “Grit” to Ocean City

This was one time when transforming a city into a “Gritty City” could be considered a good thing – at least if you’re a Philadelphia Flyers fan. Ocean City became just that, when the Flyers 2023 Community Caravan came to town Wednesday, bringing along its popular orange mascot, "Gritty," arena host Everett Jackson, Flyers alumni Steve Coates, Scott Hartnell, Dave Schultz, Bob Kelly and Todd Fedoruk, current players and the Flyers Ice Team.

Local Sailing Instructor Wins Prestigious Race

Tyler Myers knows that to be a good sailing instructor – a really good one – you have to keep honing your skills. You have to keep reaching and keep winning. He does just that. In fact, this month, Myers, 33, of Marmora, won a 43-mile race called the Statue of Liberty Marathon in his Hobie catamaran. It began at the Sandy Hook Bay Catamaran Club in Atlantic Highlands, N.J., and looped around the New York Harbor and returned to the Atlantic Highlands in Monmouth County.

Protesters Link Hands on Beach to Denounce Offshore Wind Farms

Max Maher had no intention of going to an offshore wind farm protest in Ocean City on Saturday. But when the Johnstown, Pa., teenager read a pamphlet handed to her on the Boardwalk warning about what could happen if a wind farm is built off the South Jersey coast, she felt she had to go. “I came for the weekend to see my friends. I’m not a huge beachgoer, but when I read that the wind farm could destroy the marine life and the environment, I was angry,” the 16-year-old said. “I wanted to do my part.” Opponents of a proposed wind energy farm off the South Jersey coast joined hands and formed a human chain symbolizing their fight against a project they believe will cause harm to the shore’s economy and the environment.
