Dear Friends,
With spring approaching, our road improvement projects are starting up. Like everybody else, I get frustrated with trying to get around town to do simple things like going to the post office. But these projects are important and we always try to schedule them to be completed in the off-season.
At the post office, we’re working to eliminate the big puddle that forms along the sidewalk and blocks the entrance. Drainage work there is complete, and we will be able to pour concrete in the coming weeks.
Drainage improvements at Sixth Street and Wesley Avenue and at Third Street and Corinthian are also complete with concrete work to follow. The water company replaced a sewer main and installed a new manhole outside the Civic Center to address issues that occurred there earlier this year.
The rebuilding of the tennis courts at Fifth Street continues on schedule. Base paving is complete, and final paving will take place as soon as the weather breaks.
I’m sad to report on the passing of Ocean City resident Tom Ulmer. Tom began his career in Ocean City at a young age renting umbrellas and rafts on the 34th Street Beach at Ulmer’s Snack Bar, and he owned and operated Ulmer’s Appliance in Ocean City for 44 years. He was a Navy veteran and active member of the Ocean City Exchange Club and Masonic Lodge.
Please join Michele and me in extending deepest condolences to the Ulmer family and to the family of our Senior Center Supervisor Karen Bergman, who recently lost her father, George Mazzacano, of Port Richmond in Philadelphia.
I hope everybody’s planning to support our local merchants at the Market Madness event 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Ocean City Civic Center. It will be a great opportunity to take advantage of discounts and specials on all your favorite local merchandise. More information is available here.
I will be giving the annual State of the City address and presenting our proposed 2025 municipal budget to City Council at 6 p.m. Thursday (March 13) at City Hall. I want to encourage everybody to attend and to continue to follow this public process as we work toward a final budget approval in May.
I hope you all have a great weekend.
Warm regards,
Mayor Jay A. Gillian
