A female pit bull was left tied to a bench outside of the Humane Society of Ocean City just after midnight Thursday in the latest episode of dog “dumping.”

The dog’s name is Mello and she is seen on a video provided by HSOC on its Facebook page circling the bench anxiously.

“This dog was found by Ocean City Police shortly after midnight on August 1st. She was tied to a bench in front of our shelter with a note stating they could no longer care for her,” HSOC said in a post Friday.

The handwritten note left by the owner said the dog “is a 1-year-old pit, named Mello. She needs a new home. We can no longer take care of her. She is trained and loveable. She doesn’t bite.”

The note also says, “She has her shots. She’s fixed. Please help her.”

The HSOC is a no-kill shelter at 1 Shelter Road off Tennessee Avenue.

The shelter hosts charity events throughout the year to raise funds to help unwanted animals and receives donations for supplies to care for the animals. They have staff and volunteers to take care of all of the animals.

They also provide services to those who adopt the animals, including training and veterinary services as well as animal control services for the city.

In a Facebook post, the shelter staff wanted the public to answer one question: Why are so many people dumping their pets?

“If we say we love them so much, then why are people dumping animals at a record pace!?” the post read. “This is the fourth dog that has been dumped in our shelter in just the last 30 days and very sadly, our story is not very unique. Just talk to anyone at shelters in Atlantic, Cape May, Gloucester, Cumberland, Salem, etc.”

The staff voiced frustration.

“People are dumping these animals like never has been seen before and we think we as a society need to try to wrap our heads around it and figure out what the heck is going on,” the post read.

The HSOC has video cameras installed at the site. They posted the video on the Humane Society of Ocean City’s Facebook page, where Mello is seen anxiously circling around the bench.

“We have the full video here on our shelter cameras, not really to shame, but just to show how impactful and sad to see this poor dog being tied to a bench and left in the dark, all the while looking to see where her person went,” the post read. “Ugh, how very sad.”
