Mayor’s Message: Sept. 6

  • News
Dear Friends, We are seeing some strong gusts of wind on Friday. The ocean is churned up with rough surf, and we are experiencing some minor street flooding at high tide this afternoon. But fortunately, that appears to be the extent of what we can expect from Hurricane Dorian as it speeds away to the north. First, I want to continue to urge everybody to use caution in these conditions. A Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect through 7 p.m. tonight. In addition to flooded streets, high winds could make driving hazardous. Please stay out of the ocean in these dangerous conditions today, and swim only at beaches guarded by the Ocean City Beach Patrol this weekend (see list). Second, I hope you can extend your thoughts and prayers to those in the Bahamas and the southeastern United States who felt the brunt of this powerful storm. There are many lost lives and lost homes. As we know from Sandy, the storm is just the start. The cleanup and rebuilding will be a long and trying process. We received generous help from across the nation in the wake of Sandy, and I urge you all to return the favor by lending whatever support you can. I want to remind you again that once-a-week trash and recycling pickup begins on Monday (
see detail). The Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority wastewater force main replacement project along Bay Avenue and 31st Street is underway. You can sign up for weekly updates here. Warm regards, Mayor Jay Gillian
