Mayor’s Message: Oct. 11

  • News
Dear Friends, Even though the weather is dry today, we can expect at least one more round of flooding. A distant coastal storm and steady north winds will combine to increase water levels, particularly in the hours around high tide at 7:40 p.m. this evening. The tides this week have been slightly below what was predicted by the National Weather Service, but we still can expect flooding similar to what we experienced on Thursday evening. Please be prepared to move your cars in advance of this evening’s high tide. For more information, visit www.ocnj.us/oem/. The wind is expected to fade quickly as the storm moves away on Saturday, and the forecast looks good for Saturday’s Fall Block Party
. But the fireworks scheduled for 9 p.m. Saturday have been canceled. The fireworks display was to have traveled by barge through the Great Egg Harbor Inlet, and the marine forecast calls for continued rough seas. By making the call today, we save significant staging costs that would be lost if the barge were unable to launch. The Ocean City Fire Department Open House has been rescheduled for 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17. The community is invited to this free event to learn more about fire safety and how the department works. Free paper-shredding services for Ocean City residents and property owners will be available 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday as part of our semi-annual Household Cleanup Days. See more information. I also want to encourage everybody to attend a town hall meeting on Saturday, Oct. 19 at the Ocean City Tabernacle (550 Wesley Avenue). The first portion at 9:30 a.m. will outline our bayside dredging plans, and the second half at 11 a.m. will provide updates to our flood mitigation plans. Warm regards, Mayor Jay A. Gillian
