Mayor’s Message: Sept. 18

  • News
Dear Friends, The rain is gone and the weekend forecast looks good. But strong northeast winds and a new moon tide could contribute to minor tidal flooding. Please keep an eye out if streets begin to flood, and be prepared to move your vehicles well in advance of high tides from this evening through Sunday. More information on the forecast and predicted water levels is available at www.ocnj.us/oem. Cape May County’s Fare-Free Transportation launched a pilot program this week in Ocean City. The program will offer free rides within Ocean City any time between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The county’s service is designed to help all those with no easy means of transportation, including seniors, people with disabilities and low-income residents, but it is available to anybody over the age of 18 for any reason. A local telephone call or downloading a free app are all that are required to book rides on-demand. Learn more about how to use the service here. Two Cape May County road projects could cause minor traffic delays next week. Inspectors will be conducting a mandatory check of 34th Street Bridge conditions on Monday and Tuesday, and traffic will be limited to one lane in alternating directions (
see more). The county is continuing work to replace the wastewater pipelines on Bay Avenue between Eighth Street and 31st Street, and lane shifts and limited local detours are anticipated for next week (see more). All those who travel the 34th Street Bridge and Bay Avenue may want to plan alternative routes. Sign-in details are now available for the Oct. 14 virtual meeting that will give local property owners a chance to make sure their homes are being rated accurately for flood insurance. All Ocean City policy holders are invited to participate. See more information. This is the final weekend of the calendar summer. I hope you’re able to get outside and enjoy it while it lasts. Warm regards, Mayor Jay A. Gillian
