PROGRESS: Sand-pumping operations continue at 54th Street. At the same time, excavators are digging up old sand fence and bulldozers are reshaping the sand berm created by the city in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy. The berm had been planted with dune grass, but it's clear now that the Army Corps of Engineers will completely rebuild the dune structure at that part of the island. Access to the beach is closed at 53rd and 54th streets. The second phase of the south end beach replenishment project is now complete at St. David’s Place (between 47th and 48th streets).
WHAT’S NEXT: The project will proceed from 55th Street to St. David’s Place (mid-May to mid-June), then from 55th to 59th (mid-June to mid-July).
