PROGRESS: As of Sunday afternoon, work to remove and store equipment during a 6 to 8 week dredge repair is complete. Work stopped on Saturday (May 30) due to an engine problem on the hopper dredge that has been pumping new sand onto the beaches since mid-April. The Liberty Island at port in Norfolk, Va., as it awaits an engine replacement. Work had reached 51st Street in a phase of the project that started at 55th Street and was moving northward to 47th Street.. Sections of pipeline are stored just south of the 55th Street entrance. All pipeline and equipment has been removed from all beaches but 55th Street, and the rebuilt beaches are substantially higher and wider than before the project started. At a mid-tide, the slope under the surf appeared to be fairly steep, creating a shorebreak (big waves crashing into shallow water), a condition that will gradually change over time. The first two phases of the project (from 42nd Street to 37th Street, then from 42nd Street to 47th Street) are complete. WHAT’S NEXT: The project will proceed from 52nd Street to 47th Street, then from 55th to 59th (target date for completion is Sept. 9).
