Some heavy equipment is stored at the back of the beach just north of the 55th Street entrance, where a pipeline from offshore makes landfall.
PROGRESS: As of Sunday afternoon, work to remove and store equipment during a 6 to 8 week dredge repair is complete.
Work stopped on Saturday (May 30) due to
an engine problem on the hopper dredge that has been pumping new sand onto the beaches since mid-April. The Liberty Island at port in Norfolk, Va., as it awaits an engine replacement.
Work had reached 51st Street in a phase of the project that started at 55th Street and was moving northward to 47th Street..
Sections of pipeline are stored just south of the 55th Street entrance.
All pipeline and equipment has been removed from all beaches but 55th Street, and the rebuilt beaches are substantially higher and wider than before the project started.
At 55th Street, some heavy equipment is being stored just north of the beach entrance, where a pipeline from offshore makes landfall. Sections of pipeline are stored just south of the beach entrance. Staff from the contractor is guarding the equipment.
At a mid-tide, the slope under the surf appeared to be fairly steep, creating a shorebreak (big waves crashing into shallow water), a condition that will gradually change over time.
The first two phases of the project (from 42nd Street to 37th Street, then from 42nd Street to 47th Street) are complete.
WHAT’S NEXT: The project will proceed from 52nd Street to 47th Street, then from 55th to 59th (target date for completion is Sept. 9).
