New Home for Theatre Company Up for Final Vote Thursday

  • News
A city-owned property at the corner of 15th Street and West Avenue in Ocean City, NJ, could become a new home for the Greater Ocean City Theatre Company if City Council passes the second reading of an ordinance to lease the property for $1 a year. City Council on Thursday will vote on the second and potentially final reading of an ordinance that would authorize the leasing of a city-owned building at 15th Street and West Avenue to the the nonprofit Greater Ocean City Theatre Company (OCTC) for $1 a year. The public meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Dec. 18 at City Hall. Council passed the first reading of the ordinance unanimously on Dec. 4. The property is a vacant building not currently needed for municipal use, according to the city. The lease will allow OCTC to consolidate “four different locations on the island under one roof and to function with a little more financial stability,” Artistic Director Michael Hartman said. The company would create a performing arts facility used to run its youth theater camps for the city, to stage rehearsals for its full calendar of productions throughout the year, and to create a base for costuming and props. It would not be a location for live performances — which would continue to be staged at the Ocean City Music Pier, Performing Arts Center at Ocean City High School or other locations on the island. Other items on council's agenda include:
  • South End Emergency Sand: Authorizing a contract with H4 Enterprises of Cape May Court House to haul sand from the north end of the island to the south on an as-needed basis until a beach replenishment project starts in the spring.
  • Affordable Housing Money: Confirming that the city will spend $2.1 million on a yet-to-be-determined affordable housing project.
  • Annual Bike Auction Date: Setting Monday, July 20, 2015 as the date for the annual bike auction.
  • Tourist Development Commission: Appointing Burt Wilkins (but not Chuck Bangle) to the Ocean City Tourist Development Commission.
