Mayor Jay Gillian announced Thursday that he will pull his nomination of Chuck Bangle for a second term on the volunteer Ocean City Tourist Development Commission.
“Following discussions between the administration and Charles Bangle over the past two days, it was agreed that Mr. Bangle would not be reappointed to a position on the Ocean City Tourist Development Commission at this time,” Gillian said in a statement released early Thursday afternoon. “The resolution appointing members to the commission has been removed from the agenda for the City Council meeting of Dec. 4, 2014.”
City Council had been scheduled to vote tonight (Thursday, Dec. 4) on the reappointment of Bangle to another two-year term on the commission. Gillian had made the nomination and it was included as part of a council agenda released on Tuesday.
Bangle currently serves as chairman of the commission as he awaits trial on a 30-count arrest that alleges he and his wife, Mary Bangle, concealed approximately $981,000 in income from the Internal Revenue Service as co-owners of Manco & Manco Pizza, according to U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman.
At the time of his arrest in April 2014, City Solicitor Dorothy McCrosson said Bangle’s position as commission chair would not be affected until the case is adjudicated. Bangle did not resign and continued to be an active member and leader of the commission.
The five voting members of the commission are volunteers representing different segments of the Ocean City tourist economy. The commission controls a budget of more than $750,000 funded by mercantile and rental-unit fees.
The resolution that has been pulled from tonight’s meeting also included the nomination of Burt Wilkins, broker of record with Goldcoast Sotheby’s International Realty in Ocean City, to his first full two-year term on the commission.
