The air temperature was in the 30s, the water temperature in the low 40s and the winds a steady 15 to 20 mph, but about 1,000 people greeted the new year with a swim in the Atlantic Ocean — or at last a hasty dash into the surf and back.
The First Dip has become and increasingly popular part of Ocean City’s annual First Day celebration on New Year’s Day.
Ocean City Public Relations Director Mark Soifer said about 550 signed waivers for the event, and he estimated another 500 participated in the plunge without signing.
