Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland, together with Sheriff Robert Nolan, are alerting residents to a recent telephone scam in which individuals are receiving calls from persons falsely claiming to be members of the Cape May County Sheriff’s Office.
In these calls, the scammers tell victims that they owe money for fines or missed court appearances and threaten that a warrant will be issued for their arrest if payment is not made immediately, according to a news release from the Prosecutor’s Office.
The callers often demand payment through unconventional methods such as gift cards, wire transfers, or other non-traditional means.
The Cape May County Sheriff’s Office and all law enforcement agencies do not contact individuals by phone to demand payment or threaten arrest in exchange for immediate payment. Law enforcement agencies will never request payment via gift cards, prepaid debit cards, or similar methods, the release stated.
Residents are advised to hang up immediately if they receive such a call and should not provide personal or financial information.
“The Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office urges all residents to remain vigilant and share this information with family members, particularly elderly relatives who are often targeted by these types of scams,” the release said.
If anyone believes they have been a victim of this scam, contact the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office at 609-465-1135.
